You gotta love the Mynah bird, and the weird way he walks.

It's my understanding that the animator who worked on the Lion in this cartoon was Shamus Culhane, a maverick in the industry. He began at Fleischer's studio working on the early Betty Boops and graduated up to Disney's Snow White and Pinocchio. When he wore out his welcome at Disney's and Fleischer's (again), he went to WB where Leon Schlesinger offered him a directors job. He worked on this one cartoon, and when Schlesinger reneged on his director's offer, he quit.

I love the minimalist, almost Dr. Seuss-like backgrounds from Chuck Jones' 1940's Warner Brothers cartoons. Jones is one of my all-time favorite animation directors.

I remember watching this sometime in the 1990's and now I am 17. I wish they put this back on television. I liked when the lion cried like a baby when the bird got his meat.

This was always one of my favorite childhood cartoons. Still is, and I'm now 26 years old. Some things never get old, I guess. |
